No 3D printer? How to get a model printed

You do not need a 3D printer of your own to get a model 3D printed, and it is easier than printing it yourself. Download the file from a model site, upload it to us and choose a material and a colour. You see the price before you order, and we print the model and send it to you as a tracked parcel anywhere in Sweden.

Where to find models

Ready-made 3D models, usually STL files, are shared on a handful of large sites, and most of them are free to download:

  • MakerWorld, run by Bambu Lab, with many models as 3MF files with ready-made settings.
  • Printables, run by Prusa, with a large range that is easy to search.
  • Thingiverse, the site that has been around longest, with a very large range but also many older models.
  • Cults3D and MyMiniFactory, where many models are paid for, often figures and more elaborate models.

Search in English, since that is the language most models are described in. Read the comments and look at the photos from other people who have printed the model. They say more about how it turns out than the photos from whoever uploaded it.

Download the right file

Download the model as STL or 3MF. STL is the most common format and can be read by every program. 3MF also carries the model's units, and a 3MF project from MakerWorld may hold settings that the order page starts from. If you get a zip file, unpack it. A model often comes as several files, one per part, and then you can either upload one file at a time or put the parts in one shared file, which comes cheaper. How to do that is in the guide Several parts in one file.

Check the size. We print up to 256 × 256 × 256 mm in one piece, and you see the model's dimensions as soon as the file is uploaded. The model is printed at the size the file has. Which format suits which case, and what to do if the dimensions look wrong, is in the guide STL, 3MF, STEP or OBJ.

Print it yourself or order it?

A 3D printer of your own is fun to have if you print often. For someone who wants a few things printed a year, it is rarely worth it. The printer costs from a few thousand kronor, needs a place to stand and time to learn. The first print comes loose from the plate, the next one strings and sags on the overhangs, the material takes on moisture if it is left out, and every failed print costs both material and evenings.

If you order instead, you upload the file, choose a material and a colour, see the price and pay. We prepare the print on a calibrated printer, print it, remove the support material, check the part and send it as a tracked parcel. The preview shows you in advance how it will be printed, layer by layer.

Choose a material

We print in PLA and PETG. PLA gives sharp detail and a matt surface and suits figures, ornaments and most things that stay indoors. PETG is tougher and copes better with heat and moisture, so it suits holders, brackets and anything that lives outdoors. Many model pages state which material the model was made for. Follow it unless you have a reason to choose otherwise. The comparison is in the guide PLA or PETG, and if the part is to replace something that has broken, there is more in the guide 3D printed replacement parts.

What it costs

The price depends on how much material the model uses and how long it takes to print, and you see it, including VAT, before you order. A small hook or knob lands near our lowest price, a palm-sized figure costs a few hundred kronor, and several copies of the same model come cheaper each. Shipping is added at the checkout once you have entered your address. How the price is worked out, and how to lower it, is in the guide What does 3D printing cost.

Order the print

Upload the file on Order a custom 3D print online. You see the model in your browser and can turn it, choose material, colour and quantity, and get an approximate price straight away and the exact price a minute or so later. You can order 1 to 20 copies and pay by card, Swish, Klarna, Apple Pay or Google Pay. If you want more copies, you send the file for a quote on the same page. The file is used only to calculate the price and make your order, and a file that does not lead to a purchase is deleted after 7 days.

How long it takes

Custom prints are normally sent within 7 days as a tracked parcel, anywhere in Sweden. The time in transit comes on top. Delivery times, delivery options and shipping prices are on Shipping and delivery, and you can follow the parcel on its way.

Ask us

If you are unsure about the material, the layer height or how the model should lie, contact us and describe what the part is for, with a link to the model if you have one. We normally reply within 2 working days with a suggestion. If you have a file that almost works, or a simple functional part that needs adjusting to fit, we can in some cases help with that free of charge when the print is ordered from us.

No file at all?

We do not design whole models to order. If you need something that is not available to download, you can either draw it yourself in a CAD program or ask someone to draw it for you. Simple parts are quick to draw in Tinkercad, which is free and runs in the browser, and the guide 3D printed replacement parts has the dimensions worth keeping to. Once the file exists, you take it to the order page as usual, and if it is nearly right we can often help with the last bit.
